Georgia: Government denies plan to crackdown on civil liberties

The Georgian Dream government has denied allegations of an imminent crackdown on civic liberties.
Reports from TV company Mtavari Arkhi suggest plans for a state of emergency and curfew following Mikheil Kavelashvili's presidential inauguration on December 29.
Kavelashvili was elected last month in what many have deemed fraudulent elections, with the incumbent president pledging to remain in office until new elections are conducted.
The proposed curfew appears aimed at preventing a resurgence of the significant protests that occurred in Georgia over electoral issues in recent weeks.
Additionally, Georgian Dream intends to forcibly clear Rustaveli Avenue by December 12, exacerbating tensions with demonstrators.
Critics recall the prior curfew during the Covid-19 pandemic, which many perceive as a means for the government to maintain control.
This situation continues to unfold as public discontent with the government's actions grows.
